LEI Registration in India — Get Your Legal Entity Identifier Online

LEI registration is mandatory for every legal entity in India that participates in financial transactions regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code issued under the ISO 17442 standard that globally identifies any legal entity involved in financial dealings. Without an active LEI, banks cannot process large transactions, approve loans above ₹5 crore, or facilitate participation in derivatives and securities markets.

Is LEI Mandatory for Your Business?
If your company has fund-based or non-fund-based exposure of ₹5 crore or more with any bank, or if you participate in OTC derivatives, forex markets, or securities trading — LEI registration is legally mandatory under RBI and SEBI regulations. Non-compliance can lead to transaction rejections and regulatory penalties.

Who Needs LEI Registration in India?

Entity Type When LEI is Required
Companies (Pvt Ltd / Public) Bank borrowings of ₹5 crore+, OTC derivative transactions, securities issuance
LLPs & Partnership Firms Fund-based or non-fund-based exposure of ₹5 crore+ with scheduled commercial banks
Banks & NBFCs All financial market transactions, RTGS/NEFT above threshold, government securities trading
Mutual Funds & FPIs All depository transactions, stock exchange participation, SEBI reporting
Insurance Companies IRDA-regulated financial transactions and reporting
Trusts, Societies, NGOs When involved in financial transactions exceeding RBI thresholds or receiving foreign contributions

Key Benefits of LEI Registration

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

Meet mandatory RBI, SEBI, and IRDA requirements. Avoid transaction rejections and penalties for non-compliance.

FASTER TRANSACTIONS

Banks verify your entity instantly through the global LEI database. Large payments, loans, and RTGS transfers process without delays.

GLOBAL RECOGNITION

Your LEI code is recognized worldwide. Essential for cross-border transactions, international trade finance, and global financial reporting.

ENHANCED CREDIBILITY

An active LEI signals transparency and regulatory compliance to banks, investors, and counterparties — builds trust in every transaction.

LEI Registration Process in India — Step by Step

LEI registration in India is processed through Legal Entity Identifier India Limited (LEIL), the only RBI-authorized issuing agency in the country. Our team handles the complete process so you receive your LEI code without dealing with the portal complexity.

1
Submit Business Details

Share your company's basic details — registered name, CIN/LLPIN, PAN, registered address, and authorized signatory information. We prepare the application in the format required by LEIL.

2
Document Preparation & Verification

We compile all required documents — Certificate of Incorporation, PAN, MOA/AOA (for companies), Board Resolution authorizing the LEI application, and audited financials. All documents are verified for accuracy before submission.

3
LEIL Portal Application

The application is submitted on the official LEIL portal with all required entity details, ownership structure, and supporting documents. The authorized signatory's details are registered for verification.

4
LEIL Review & Validation

LEIL validates the submitted information against MCA records and the global GLEIF database. If any clarification is needed, we handle the response so there are no delays from your end.

LEI Code Issued

Once approved, your unique 20-character LEI code is issued and published on the global GLEIF database. You can immediately use it for bank transactions, regulatory filings, and financial reporting.

Understanding the LEI Code Structure

Characters Purpose Example
1–4 LOU Prefix — identifies the issuing organization (LEIL for India) 3358
5–18 Entity-specific identifier — unique to your organization 00KZEB2RXWF7DL
19–20 Verification digits — checksum for data integrity 82

LEI Validity and Annual Renewal

Important — LEI Must Be Renewed Every Year
An LEI code is valid for one year from the date of issuance. If not renewed before expiry, the status changes to "Lapsed" on the global GLEIF database — and banks will reject transactions linked to a lapsed LEI. We send renewal reminders 60 days before expiry and handle the complete renewal process for you.

RBI Mandates for LEI in India

Transaction Type LEI Requirement
Bank Borrowings ≥ ₹5 Crore Mandatory — banks must capture LEI for all new and existing borrowers above this threshold
RTGS / NEFT Large Value Transfers Mandatory for transactions above ₹50 crore — LEI must be included in payment messages
OTC Derivatives & Forex Mandatory — all participants in derivative and forex markets must hold an active LEI
Government Securities Trading Mandatory for all non-individual participants in the G-Sec market
SEBI-Regulated Transactions Mandatory for FPIs, listed companies, depository participants, and stock exchange members

Frequently Asked Questions

A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code issued under the ISO 17442 standard that globally identifies a legal entity in financial transactions. In India it is mandatory for entities with large bank exposures, participants in OTC derivatives and securities markets, and large-value RTGS/NEFT transactions, under RBI and SEBI rules. It is the financial world’s global “identity number” for organisations.

An LEI is mandatory for: non-individual bank borrowers with aggregate fund-based + non-fund-based exposure of ₹5 crore or more (RBI directive); RTGS/NEFT transactions of ₹50 crore and above (non-individual); participants in OTC derivatives, forex and securities markets; and certain SEBI-regulated activities and bond issuances. If your entity meets any of these, an active LEI is legally required to transact.

In India the LEI is issued by Legal Entity Identifier India Limited (LEIL), a subsidiary of the Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL) and the only RBI-authorised LEI issuer (Local Operating Unit) in the country. LEIL validates your details against MCA records and the global GLEIF database before issuing the code, which is then published on the global GLEIF register. We prepare and file the application in LEIL’s required format.

An LEI is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. On renewal, the entity’s reference data is re-validated. If not renewed before expiry, the LEI status changes to “Lapsed” on the global GLEIF database — the code still exists but is flagged, and banks/counterparties will reject transactions linked to a lapsed LEI. We send renewal reminders ahead of expiry and handle the renewal so it never lapses.

The fee comprises LEIL’s issuance charge plus an annual renewal/maintenance charge (set by LEIL), in addition to our professional fee for application preparation and validation handling. Because LEIL’s rates and your entity’s data complexity vary, we provide a customised quote based on your requirements — covering both the initial issuance and ongoing annual renewals.

Typically you need entity proof (incorporation certificate/registration), PAN, address proof, details of the ownership/parent structure (for “level-2” relationship data), and a board resolution/authorisation and, where required, an LEIL-format application letter. The exact set depends on entity type (company, LLP, partnership, trust, etc.). We give you a precise checklist and handle any clarifications LEIL raises.

The LEI is structured per ISO 17442: characters 1–4 are the LOU prefix (identifying the issuer — LEIL’s prefix for India); characters 5–18 are the entity-specific identifier unique to your organisation; and characters 19–20 are check digits (a checksum for data integrity). This globally unique code lets any bank or regulator instantly verify your entity via the GLEIF database.

PAN, CIN and GSTIN are India-specific identifiers for tax, corporate-registry and GST purposes. An LEI is a global identifier recognised across countries and financial systems, used specifically to identify parties to financial transactions worldwide. It does not replace your Indian identifiers — it complements them, and is essential for cross-border transactions and global financial reporting.

Without an active LEI (or with a lapsed one), banks cannot process the large transactions that require it — loans/exposures of ₹5 crore+, RTGS/NEFT of ₹50 crore+, and derivative/securities dealings — leading to transaction rejections and potential regulatory penalties. Reactivation requires completing the renewal/re-validation. We manage renewals proactively so your code stays active and your transactions are never blocked.

Once a complete application with correct documents is submitted, LEIL validates the data against MCA and GLEIF records and issues the LEI — typically within a few working days, faster when no clarifications are needed. The issued code is published on the global GLEIF register and can be used immediately for bank transactions and regulatory filings. We handle any LEIL clarifications to avoid delays.
